What Can BOTOX Treatment Achieve?

BOTOX is a highly purified protein that is injected into the skin to relax the muscles that cause certain wrinkles. Quick, safe, and effective, BOTOX injections in Upper East Side can reduce facial lines and wrinkles for up to six months with no downtime and little to no discomfort. The neuromodulator has been FDA approved since 2002 for treatment of the frown lines between the brows (commonly referred to as the angry “11’s”) as well as crow’s feet.

Common Uses for BOTOX

Through a series of tiny injections, BOTOX achieves a rejuvenated look by:

  • Smoothing crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Reducing frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Softening horizontal lines across the forehead
  • Decreasing worry lines around the mouth
  • Smoothing vertical bands on the neck
  • Achieving a non-surgical brow lift

How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX (OnabotulinumtoxinA) is a form of botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A), a therapeutic muscle relaxing agent derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Originally approved by the FDA for the treatment of eye muscle spasms, BOTOX was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value. It has now been used for years as a treatment to correct visible signs of stress and aging.

When injected in small doses in specific areas, BOTOX blocks the nerve signals that trigger the repetitive facial contractions responsible for dynamic lines and wrinkles.

In this way, BOTOX smooths the creases that make you look tired, sad, or angry. For optimal results, many patients choose to use BOTOX in conjunction with a facelift, skin rejuvenation treatments, and/or skin resurfacing (chemical peels or laser therapy.)

Other Neuromodulators

Although BOTOX was the first FDA-approved neuromodulator and has become a household name, alternative products may be recommended for some patients.

Dysport

Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxin A) differs from BOTOX due to its smaller molecule size and product formula. In some patients, Dysport may produce better results than those obtained with BOTOX.

Xeomin

Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxin A) is distinct from other neuromodulators because it uses a purified state of BoNT-A and does not include additives. There may be less risk of developing neuromodulator tolerance with Xeomin, and it offers an alternative for patients who don’t achieve their desired results with BOTOX or Dysport.

The BOTOX Procedure

Dr. Hutchinson will inject BOTOX into designated muscles in your face that are causing lines and wrinkles. BOTOX injections are relatively painless, as the needle used is very small and fine. Treatment requires no anesthetic, although you may experience brief, mild discomfort during the injections. This safe and effective anti-aging solution takes only a few minutes, and recovery is immediate, allowing you to return to work and resume your normal daily activities right away.

Downtime and Results

Immediately following treatment, some patients may experience mild bruising, which goes away shortly. You may see wrinkles begin to fade within 24-48 hours, with continued improvement over the next 7-10 days. The effects typically last 3-4 months, but with repeat treatments, the wrinkles may become increasingly less visible.

Although there is no real downtime with BOTOX, there are some restrictions. As with any cosmetic procedure, Dr. Hutchinson may advise patients to avoid certain activities or facial treatments based on individual factors such as the particular area where BOTOX was administered and the amount injected.

BOTOX for Excessive Sweating

BOTOX is also frequently used to treat axillary hyperhidrosis, a medical condition in which patients experience excessive sweating under the arms. It may also be used for palmar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the palms of the hands) and plantar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the soles of the feet.)

The treatment involves injecting BOTOX with a very fine needle into the sweat glands under the skin (rather than at the muscle, as with cosmetic injections.) The effects of BOTOX for sweating may be seen within two weeks of treatment and typically last 6-9 months.
