Why Choose a Breast Lift?

A woman’s breasts may droop as a result of aging and gravity or after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. A breast lift (mastopexy) is performed to restore a more youthful shape to breasts that have sagged or lost perkiness by tightening the breast tissue, repositioning the nipples, and redraping the breast skin.

What Can a Breast Lift Address?

  • Breasts that are sagging or droopy
  • Breasts that have lost their shape
  • Breasts that are flat, elongated, or pendulous
  • Breast skin and/or areolas that are stretched out
  • Nipples that point downward
  • Nipples that are located below the inframammary fold
  • Asymmetry where one breast is lower than the other

How Does a Breast Lift Work?

A breast lift is designed to rejuvenate the breasts by trimming excess skin and re-shaping the underlying breast tissue to achieve an uplifted, youthful contour without altering overall breast size.

After this surgery, the breasts are firmer, perkier, and higher on the chest. A breast lift in Upper East Side can also reposition and reduce the size of the areolas, which may have become stretched out over time.

Breast Lift and Implants

Women who have lost breast volume may opt for concurrent breast augmentation with either saline or silicone implants at the time of their breast lift. Conversely, those who have already undergone breast augmentation may benefit from a breast lift when considering breast implant removal or a reduction in the size of their implants.

Who are the Best Breast Lift Candidates?

Women who may benefit from a breast lift aren’t looking for a change in the volume or size of their breasts; rather, they are unhappy with the shape and projection of their breasts, the position of their nipples and/or areolas, or a combination of both. Considered a top breast lift surgeon in NYC, Dr. Hutchinson will skillfully and safely address your areas of concern.

Patients who make the best candidates for a breast lift in NYC are those who:

  • Feel that their breasts are sagging
  • Have nipples that are too low
  • Have lost skin elasticity
  • Have asymmetric breasts with one breast lower than the other
  • Have a congenital breast deformity such as tuberous breasts, with enlarged, downward pointing nipples and areolas
  • Do not smoke and are in general good health

Breast Lift Preparation

In order to have the best breast lift procedure and the smoothest recovery possible, Dr. Hutchinson provides her patients with thorough instructions to be followed before their breast lift in New York

She will make recommendations for breast imaging including mammogram, sonogram, and/or MRI as necessary, as well as requirements for medical clearance and bloodwork prior to your surgery. She will also advise you on your overall wellness, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, diet, and weight; avoiding smoking, and not taking medication that can increase risk of complications. As a top breast lift surgeon in NYC, Dr. Hutchinson will guide you every step of the way along your entire surgical experience.

Breast Lift Surgery Details

Dr. Hutchinson performs breast lifts either in the privacy of her fully AAAASF accredited operating room in her Upper East Side office, or at one of her affiliated NYC hospitals.

A breast lift is an outpatient surgery and is performed under general anesthesia. The surgery usually lasts from 1-2 hours.

During the operation, Dr. Hutchinson will make the necessary incisions and will then lift and reshape the breast tissue into its new, rejuvenated contour. She will move the nipple and areola higher on the breast and remove extra skin around the perimeter if the areola is enlarged. Finally, she will trim the excess breast skin and make sure the breasts are symmetric. Dr. Hutchinson specializes in short scar breast lift techniques using the minimum number of incisions.

When the breast lift is complete, the skin is closed with stitches and surgical tape. The deeply layered stitches throughout the breast tissue and the new breast tissue structure itself will now support the lifted breasts.

What Type of Incisions are Used?

There are several types of incision methods that can be used for a breast lift. Incisions result in scars that usually fade with time and become less and less visible.

The technique that Dr. Hutchinson chooses will depend on your:

  • Breast size and shape
  • Degree of sagging
  • Size and position of the areolas/nipples
  • Amount of excess skin
  • Skin quality
  • Choice of concurrent breast augmentation with saline or silicone breast implants

The three most common incision types are:

  • Two rings around the areola in a doughnut shape (small incision mastopexy, generally only recommended for patients with small breasts and minimal sagging)
  • Around the areola and extended vertically down to the crease under the breast in a “lollipop” shape
  • The “lollipop” with an additional half-moon incision along the breast crease, in an anchor shape

Recovery

After surgery, the breasts will be wrapped with gauze dressings and you may need to wear a surgical bra. After a few days, this is replaced with a soft support bra, which is worn for several weeks.

Every patient will have her own personal experience and recovery after their breast lift in NYC, but in general, you may experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort for a few days, which will eventually resolve. Any numbness in the breasts and nipples should lessen as swelling subsides. Stitches are absorbable and will gradually dissolve over a few weeks. Many patients return to work within a week of their surgery. It is essential you refrain from strenuous physical activity after surgery and closely follow the detailed instructions provided by Dr. Hutchinson.

What Risks are Involved?

Possible complications of a breast lift include bleeding, infection, numbness, unevenness, or a buildup of fluid.

With a reputation as a top breast lift surgeon, Dr. Hutchinson ensures that these risks remain very rare and will be temporary, should they occur. She will discuss the risks and complications of breast lift with you prior to surgery.

Breast Lift Results

During your consultation with Dr. Hutchinson, she will have an in-depth discussion about your goals and expectations regarding your breast lift surgery. You will be able to see the results of your breast lift immediately after surgery, and the outcome will continue to improve as swelling goes down and incision lines fade. The breast tissues and scars will continue to heal over time until your final results are achieved. Most patients are extremely satisfied with the look of their lifted breasts.

Your Breast Lift Consultation

Before your breast lift, you will have an initial consultation with Dr. Hutchinson to ensure that you are a good candidate for the surgery. This first meeting with the doctor will include the following:

  • A discussion about your medical history
  • A conversation regarding what you dislike about your breasts and what you hope to achieve with surgery
  • A focused physical examination
  • Taking “before” medical photographs
  • A discussion of your plastic surgery options
  • The development of your customized surgical plan
  • Information on what is required of you before and after your breast lift to ensure a successful operation and smooth recovery
  • The opportunity to voice any questions or concerns you have
  • The option to schedule your surgery if you decide to proceed

Evaluating Your Current Breasts

In order to help you understand what results are achievable with a breast lift and what the ideal surgical plan is for you, Dr. Hutchinson will discuss the details of your current breast shape and physical characteristics. For some patients, concurrent breast augmentation surgery with silicone or saline implants may be advisable to improve the aesthetic outcome. Factors that may impact your results include the following:

  • Your current breast shape, including the amount of breast sagging, the volume and weight of your breasts, and the distribution of breast volume
  • The position of your nipples
  • The size and shape of your areolas
  • Your unique skin characteristics, such as the amount of excess skin and your skin quality (elasticity and tone)
  • Any breast scarring from prior surgery(ies)
  • Any breast asymmetry or differences between the breasts in terms of breast sagging, nipple position, areola size and shape, and breast volume, shape, and width.
