What Are Chin Implants?

Correction of a weak or small chin is known as “genioplasty.” It may be accomplished with either surgical advancement of the bone or with a chin implant. The implant is often preferred because it’s well-tolerated and has a quicker recovery than chin bone repositioning. The result of a well-placed chin implant is a symmetrical, well-defined jawline and improved balance among facial features. This procedure can be performed by itself or it can be undergone in conjunction with another procedure such as rhinoplasty.

Benefits of Chin Implants

  • Enhances the beauty of the other facial features by bringing balance
  • Reduces the appearance of a full or double chin
  • Improves definition of the jawline and neck
  • Brings an overall harmony to the face
  • Improves self-esteem and confidence

Why Choose Chin Implants?

Many patients choose chin implants because they want improved facial balance and jaw definition. An attractive facial contour includes a smooth, distinct jawline and  well proportioned chin. A recessive or underdeveloped chin, known as “mandibular hypoplasia,” presents the following concerns:

  • Is particularly obvious on profile views
  • Is noticeable in facial appearance from the front, in photographs and selfies
  • Is frequently associated with an overly prominent or enlarged nose
  • May contribute to an undefined neckline
  • May be seen in the context of malocclusion (a poor bite)

What Are Chin Implants Made Of?

Chin Implant Procedure and Recovery

The chin implant operation may be performed under either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. It requires either a small incision on the skin underneath the chin, or inside the mouth under the lower lip, through which the implant will be inserted. After surgery, you may have some swelling and discomfort, which is managed by medication prescribed by Dr. Hutchinson.

You may experience temporary tightness and swelling which should subside in a couple of weeks. The chin implants will eventually feel very natural, much like real bone.

Most patients can return to work and their regular activities in about 10 days, although strenuous activity such as exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks.

During your consultation, Dr. Hutchinson will advise you on perioperative instructions to help you adequately prepare for surgery and ensure your healing goes smoothly.
