What Can Perioral Dermabrasion Achieve?

As the years go by, fine lines and more pronounced wrinkles can develop around the mouth. These are known as perioral wrinkles and they occur when the plumpness of youthful skin subsides, and the effects of smoking, sun exposure, and environmental factors become evident. Perioral dermabrasion can accomplish excellent skin resurfacing results, creating a smoother and more refreshed appearance around the mouth and lower face.

How Does Perioral Dermabrasion Work?

Perioral dermabrasion uses a high speed dermabrader, which is a rotating diamond tipped tool that removes the outer layers of skin. This process stimulates new collagen production, and as the dermal tissues heal, your skin will become thicker and appear more youthful. The result is greatly reduced fine lines that lead to lipstick bleeds and rejuvenation of the entire area around the lips. Perioral dermabrasion is preferred by some patients who may be at risk of hyperpigmentation with laser resurfacing.

Procedure Details

Dermabrasion is performed in the operating room and usually requires sedation anesthesia. Before treatment, you may be prescribed antiviral medication. The top layers of skin will carefully and precisely be removed in order to create smoother skin. The treatment takes less than an hour and may be performed concurrently with other aesthetic procedures such as a facelift or neck lift.

I met Dr. Hutchinson through a family friend and she is brilliant. She gives you her time and attention and provides options (for you to make your own assessment) and thorough explanations! Also quite pleased with the results from a recent procedure. I highly recommend her as she is kind, caring, professional and talented. Her and her staff get 5 stars Overall, I would definitely recommend Dr. Hutchinson (as well as her awesome staff!)

Recovery and Results

After perioral dermabrasion is performed, you’ll be able to go home following your procedure. Dr. Hutchinson will provide you with detailed instructions on taking care of the treated area.

Recovery will take 7-10 days. During this time, your skin will be red, swollen, and may feel tender. Some patients may notice residual redness for 1-2 weeks and results will often be finalized at 6-8 weeks. (New collagen production will continue over the course of six months.)
