Do’s and Don’ts of Breast Beauty
We often think about beauty in terms of certain parts of our bodies, such as our noses, eyes, or faces. As plastic surgeons, we also consider the appearance of a woman’s breasts, and there are various procedures designed to beautify the breasts. You may be surprised to learn which factors contribute to enhancing the beauty of a woman’s breasts. Plastic surgeons have conducted research in twins to evaluate breast aesthetics based on:
- skin tone
- breast shape
- breast perkiness or droopiness
- size of areola (pigmented skin around the nipple)
Unlike the common misperception that breastfeeding leads to less attractive breasts, they found on the contrary that it prevents breast aging. Although the size and shape of the areola may be affected, skin quality was found to be better in women who breastfed. This is thought to be due to the special hormonal environment created by nursing, which counteracts the generally negative effect of pregnancy on breast appearance. Other factors shown to have a negative impact on breast appearance include:
- high number of pregnancies
- elevated BMI
- large breast cup size
Moisturizing your skin, including your breast skin, maintaining a healthy lifestyle including a balanced, nutritional diet and exercise regimen, all contribute to optimizing breast beauty. If you’re contemplating changing the appearance of your breasts, whether you would like them to be larger, smaller, or lifted, there are cosmetic surgery procedures which can help you achieve your goals, such as breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants, breast reduction, or breast lift.
