Plastic Surgery Increases Patient Happiness

Plastic surgery is more than skin deep: in addition to the visible improvement in appearance from aesthetic surgery procedures, the latest study shows patients also benefit from increased happiness, self-esteem and self-confidence. Scientific investigation of the positive psychological effects of plastic surgery has yielded tangible evidence demonstrating what surgeons have observed for years: physical enhancement translates into emotional improvement. The study reported in Clinical Psychological Science followed 550 patients for up to one year after undergoing surgery. Most commonly performed surgery included breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, breast lift, breast reduction and abdominoplasty. Results revealed positive outcomes across many psychological areas, including anxiety, depression, goal attainment, quality of life, life satisfaction, attractiveness, mental and physical health, well-being, and self-esteem.

Patients who were considering cosmetic surgery to correct or improve certain physical features seemed to benefit from positive psychological changes by proceeding with surgery. Most patients had realistic expectations from their surgery, including to “feel better” and “develop more self-confidence”, whereas 12% expressed unrealistic ones, such as wishing that all their problems “will be solved” or that they will be “a whole new person”. No adverse effects were reported.
