youngmalechestPlastic surgery is increasingly being sought by younger patients, and the millennial generation is a prime example. Born in the 80’s and 90’s, these tech-savvy young adults grew up surrounded and heavily influenced by social media – facebook, twitter, instagram, snapchat, and other platforms for visual and virtual social interactions. The “selfie”, in both photographic and video format, has led to an increase in focus on image and appearance. Related to this is increased interest for both men and women in improving their looks with the latest and newest treatments for beauty enhancement. In many patients, an improvement in their appearance also has psychological benefits and contributes to greater self-esteem: looking better can make you feel better!

Millennials have contributed to an increase in both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. The most common treatments in this group are the following:

  • Gynecomastia surgery, commonly performed in teenage and young adult males. Commonly also referred to as “man boobs”, excess fat and breast tissue in men can cause physical discomfort and social embarrassment. Correction of gynecomastia involves a minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure to remove the excess tissue and contour the chest.
  • Plastic surgery on the nose, or rhinoplasty, may be performed in patients as young as 15 or 16 years of age. Minor changes to the nose, such as dorsal hump reduction or tip refinement, can provide significant improvement in overall facial appearance.
  • Breast augmentation surgery with saline or silicone gel implants remains one of the most popular procedures in young women. With an ever increasing number of breast implant options in size, fill, and projection, women can increase their bust size by a little or a lot and achieve the look they desire.
  • Anti-aging skin procedures prevent the development of wrinkles and maintain the youthful appearance of younger skin. The most common treatments include Botox, fillers, and skin rejuvenation with microneedling and topical agents prevent or delay the signs of aging.
