Men are increasingly undergoing plastic surgery procedures, and New York City men are no exception. According to the 2010 statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), men in the U.S. underwent over 750,ooo cosmetic procedures, accounting for 8% of the total number of plastic surgery procedures in 2010.(1) This represented an 88% increase in male plastic surgery procedures since 1997. The most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures for men were: liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, gynecomastia correction (male breast reduction), and cosmetic ear surgery. Almost 40,000 men underwent liposuction procedures, 30,000 had rhinoplasty, and approximately 20,000 men had either blepharoplasty or gynecomastia surgery.(1)

Of the non-surgical cosmetic procedures, the top 3 for men were: Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox®, Dysport®) with 225,000 treatments, laser hair removal a distant second at 120,000, and hylauronic acid fillers (Juvederm®, Restylane®, Perlane®) with almost 70,000.(1)

Often some procedures may be combined for optimal results. BOTOX® and hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane® may be used concurrently for more effective skin smoothing and wrinkle reduction. Liposuction for contouring the body, such as by reducing the love handles or fatty tissue of the abdomen, may be performed in conjunction with reduction of enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia). Surgical procedures and non-surgical rejuvenation are also possible in one session, depending on each patient’s individual concerns.
