Breast augmentation now offers myriad possibilities in terms of shape, size, and final appearance. Numerous options have emerged since the original round soft silicone gel filled implants were initially cleared by the FDA in 2006. We now have 3 different manufacturers providing multiple options in size, shape, projection, shell surface texture and cross-linking of the silicone gel. The earliest silicone gel implants that were introduced for breast augmentation contain a soft, viscous gel that very closely resembles the feel of normal breast tissue and is enclosed in an elastomer silicone shell. These implants are only available in a round shape, but many options are possible based on other implant characteristics: the surface can be either smooth or textured, there is wide spectrum of sizes providing a range of volumes, and the projection (how much the implant protrudes and pushes out on the overlying breast tissue) varies from low to high.

Newer types of silicone gel, which have increased cross-linking between silicone polymer molecules, are somewhat firmer and hold their shape better than the original silicone gel, have recently been added to the breast implant pool. These silicone breast implants, commonly referred to as form-stable, “gummy bear”, or highly cohesive implants, are available in both round and anatomically or tear drop shaped styles, providing an even broader range of options. The anatomically shaped implants also vary in projection, height and width, thus allowing for many possible combinations in size, shape and upper pole fullness, depending on patients’ wishes.

If you’re considering breast augmentation to increase the fullness of your breasts or restore shapeliness after pregnancy and breastfeeding, take the time to inform yourself about the latest options in breast enhancement surgery. This will provide you with the highest probability of ensuring the best results and your overall satisfaction with your breast implant surgery.
