Liposuction – indications, alternatives and benefits.
- Posted on: Nov 3 2010
Liposuction is body contouring surgery designed to remove fat from a patient by suctioning it out. There are numerous types of liposuction available, as well as some non surgical and alternative modalities. Dr. Hutchinson has been performing liposuction in Manhattan for over a decade, and will discuss with you which options suit you best. Liposuction surgery may be performed as a single operation as well as in conjunction with other types of cosmetic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction. The ideal candidates are those who have achieved and maintained an ideal weight, and who have localized areas of fat deposits in some parts of their body. Liposuction is not a method of weight loss. Most popular body areas for liposuction are the abdomen, flanks, hips and thighs (saddle bags) in women, and the chest (for correction of gynecomastia) and flanks (love handles) in men. Once the fat is aspirated, those fat cells are removed permanently. The skin eventually shrinks back down to produce the final contour.
The most frequently used types of liposuction are tumescent, and power and ultrasound assisted. Some newer techniques include laser, radiofrequency and water-jet assisted liposuction. These all have various potential benefits, as well as limitations and risks. Dr. Hutchinson most often performs liposuction on an outpatient basis in one of the Manhattan hospitals in which she has privileges. The surgery usually only lasts 1 to 2hrs, it may safely be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, and recovery is relatively quick. Incisions are usually very small and inconspicuous once healing is complete.
At the time of your consultation, Dr. Hutchinson will discuss which options are best for you, and answer all of your questions. Please fill out our online contact form or call 212 452 1400 to schedule your consultation.
