Shaped Silicone Gel Implants Approved for Breast Augmentation

The FDA has just cleared another type of highly cohesive silicone gel breast implants for breast augmentation, the Allergan Natrelle Style 410. These “gummy bear” type implants have already been used for breast reconstruction, and have been studied extensively for safety and effectiveness for over 10 years in almost 1000 patients who underwent breast augmentation, reconstruction or revision. Women who are considering cosmetic plastic surgery for breast enhancement now have an increased number of choices available to them, including shaped silicone gel and round silicone and saline implants. Highly cohesive, form-stable shaped silicone gel implants offer the possibility of obtaining a slightly different aesthetic outcome from the round silicone implants. They may feel slightly firmer than the previously available silicone implants, whose consistency is most natural and similar to that of breast tissue. Patients must be at least 22 years old to undergo breast augmentation surgery with any kind of silicone implants, as only saline implants are approved for use in younger patients.
Breast augmentation surgery with saline or silicone implants may be combined with mastopexy (breast lift) other plastic surgery procedures, such as body contouring with liposuction or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and facial cosmetic surgery including blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) and non-invasive procedures such as Botox®, fillers and fat injections, and laser skin resurfacing.
