Mommy Makeover: A Procedure Customized Just for You

As a mother of five children, Dr. Hutchinson understands the changes a woman’s body undergoes with pregnancy. She also understands that each pregnancy is different and that each patient is unique. When you come into our office for a consultation, she will discuss all the different surgical options available and will design a unique solution tailored specifically for you. She will guide you to a well-informed decision on how to proceed in order to get the best and most natural results possible for you.

What Can a Mommy Makeover Improve?

  • Loose, flabby, or sagging skin on the abdomen
  • Separated or weak abdominal muscles
  • Hard-to-lose fat left over from pregnancy
  • Drooping breasts that have lost volume
  • Changes in body shape and contour due to prior pregnancy

A Mother’s Perspective

“Having a baby is one of the most wonderful experiences a woman can have. As a mother myself, I can attest to the many joys of having children, but also to some of its less desirable effects on the body. With pregnancy, your body undergoes many changes and often these cannot be reversed no matter how much you exercise and diet. Many parts of your body are affected by pregnancy, especially your breasts, belly, flanks, hips, and skin. Your breasts may droop and sometimes become smaller or larger, or the nipple position may change. The shape is usually not the same as it was before the baby.

Your abdominal muscles may become lax and stretched out, or the skin may sag because of stretch marks. Your belly and thighs may also accumulate fat that wasn’t there before the pregnancy. These post-maternity changes can be subtle or quite dramatic and can evolve over time. Whether you are a new mom or have grown children, if some of these changes bother you, we can improve them and bring you closer to your pre-baby self. Often it is possible to combine these procedures in one operative session, which minimizes the downtime you need to get your body back to how it was before the baby. Having had children myself, I have personally experienced the physical and psychological changes that accompany childbearing, and I am best able to design an individualized treatment plan for you.”

Breast Beauty After Baby

Pregnancy and breastfeeding combine to change the shape and size of your breasts, and often these changes are not reversible. Surgery of the breasts, including breast lift (mastopexy), breast augmentation, and breast reduction can greatly improve the appearance of your post baby breasts. Sometimes the breast lift and augmentation need to be performed together in order to achieve optimal results.

If the nipple position is too low, this too can be improved with either a breast lift or reduction, as necessary. Dr. Hutchinson will spend time discussing all of these procedures and which ones are right for you. She specializes in short scar or minimal incision types of procedures, which often significantly reduce the number and length of scars. This will give you the least noticeable and most well hidden scars.

Belly Beauty After Baby: Restoring Your Abdomen & Waistline

The core bears the heaviest physical burden during pregnancy. As your baby grows, the abdominal skin stretches, and the underlying core muscles frequently pull apart, a structural condition known as diastasis recti. After delivery, regardless of how much you diet and exercise, this structural weakening often leaves a persistent tummy "pouch," loose skin, stretch marks, or a widened waistline.

Dr. Hutchinson offers comprehensive surgical options to correct these post-maternity changes and restore a smooth, firm midsection:

  • Full Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck): Tightens separated abdominal muscles from the ribcage down to the pubic bone, removes stretched lower-belly skin, and recreates a natural-looking navel.
  • Modified / Mini Abdominoplasty: Ideal for women with mild skin laxity concentrated below the belly button, requiring a shorter incision and a quicker recovery timeline.
  • Targeted Liposuction & Contouring: Sculpting of the flanks ("love handles"), hips, and lower back to carve out a narrow, defined waistline.

Dr. Hutchinson tailors every procedure to your unique anatomical frame. Utilizing specialized minimal-incision placement, she ensures abdominal incisions are positioned low across the pelvic line so they remain fully concealed beneath standard swimsuit bottoms and undergarments.

Procedure Details & Surgical Experience in Manhattan

A Mommy Makeover is a custom combination of surgical procedures performed in a single operating session to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy body. Rather than treating individual areas separately over multiple surgeries, combining these procedures allows you to undergo general anesthesia once and complete your recovery in a consolidated timeline.

Surgical Techniques & Process

  • Core Components: Surgery typically combines abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to repair separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) and to remove stretched skin; breast surgery (lift, augmentation, or reduction) to restore shape and position; and targeted liposuction to contour the waistline, hips, and flanks.
  • Anesthesia & Duration: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Total surgical time typically ranges from 3 to 5 hours, depending on the number and complexity of procedures included in your tailored surgical plan.
  • Incision Placement: Dr. Hutchinson utilizes minimal-incision techniques whenever possible. Abdominal incisions are placed low across the pelvic line so they remain hidden beneath standard bikini bottoms, while breast incisions are placed within natural anatomical contours to minimize scar visibility.

How does core repair during a Mommy Makeover affect my posture and daily movement?

During pregnancy, internal pressure frequently separates the vertical abdominal muscles—a condition called diastasis recti. Dr. Hutchinson repairs this core wall by internal suturing, bringing the muscle bellies back together from the ribcage to the pubic bone. Beyond flattening the midsection, this structural reconstruction restores intra-abdominal support. Patients in New York who lead active lifestyles often report noticeable improvements in posture, reduced lower-back strain, and greater stability during physical activity once fully healed.

Is it better to combine breast and abdominal procedures or stage them separately?

Combining breast enhancement, abdominoplasty, and targeted liposuction into a single Mommy Makeover allows you to undergo general anesthesia once and consolidate your recovery into a single timeline, minimizing time away from work and family care. During your Manhattan consultation, Dr. Hutchinson evaluates your health profile, baseline blood counts, and goals to ensure combining these procedures fits within a safe operative window for your body.

How long should I wait after I finish breastfeeding before scheduling breast surgery?

We recommend waiting at least three to six months after completely weaning or pumping before undergoing breast lift or augmentation procedures. Lactation hormones keep glandular tissues expanded and fluid dynamics in flux. Allowing tissue to settle ensures Dr. Hutchinson can accurately assess your natural breast volume, skin elasticity, and degree of ptosis (sagging) to plan precise surgical placement.

Should I be at my exact target weight before booking a Mommy Makeover in NYC?

Ideally, you should be at or near a stable weight that you feel comfortable maintaining long term. A Mommy Makeover is designed for contouring, muscle repair, and skin tightening rather than weight loss. Significant weight fluctuations after surgery can re-stretch skin or alter breast tissue volume, which may affect your long-term aesthetic outcome.

How are post-operative drains managed after an abdominoplasty?

Surgical drains are often placed during a tummy tuck to collect natural fluid accumulation beneath the abdominal skin and prevent seromas. Our nursing team provides clear instructions on how to care for and record drain output at home. Drains are discreet, easily hidden under loose clothing, and are typically removed in our Upper East Side office within 7 to 14 days once fluid output drops to a safe level.
