Having a baby is one of the most wonderful experiences a woman can have. As a mother of five, I can attest to the many joys of having children, but also to some of its less desirable effects on our body. With pregnancy, your body undergoes many changes, and often these cannot be reversed no matter how much you exercise and diet. Many parts of your body are affected by pregnancy, including especially your breasts, belly, flanks, hips and skin. Your breasts may droop, and sometimes become smaller or larger, or the nipple position may change. The shape is usually not the same as it was before the baby. Your abdominal muscles may become lax and stretched out, or the skin may sag because of stretch marks. Your belly and thighs may also accumulate fat that wasn't there before the pregnancy. Many of these post-maternity changes can be subtle, or quite dramatic, and can evolve over time. Whether you are a new mom or have grown children, if some of these changes bother you, we offer plastic surgery procedures that can improve them and bring you closer to your pre-baby self. Often it is possible to combine these procedures in one operative session, which minimizes the down time you need to get your body back to how it was before the baby.
A Mother's Perspective
As a mother of five children, I understand full well the changes a woman's body undergoes with pregnancy. I also know that each pregnancy is different, and each patient is unique. Having had children myself, I have personally experienced the physical and psychological changes that accompany childbearing, and I am best able to design an individualized treatment plan for you.
When you come into our office for a consultation, we will discuss all the different surgical options available, and will design a unique solution tailored just for you. We will guide you to a well informed decision on how to proceed, in order to get the best and most natural results possible for you.
Breast Beauty after Baby
Pregnancy and breastfeeding combine to change the shape and size of your breasts, and often these changes are not reversible. Surgery of the breasts, including breast lift (mastopexy), breast augmentation, and breast reduction, can greatly improve the appearance of your breasts. Sometimes the breast lift and augmentation need to be performed together in order to achieve optimal results. If the nipple position is too low, this too can be improved with either a breast lift or reduction, as necessary.
Dr. Hutchinson will spend time to discuss all these procedures and which one(s) is best for you. She specializes in short scar or minimal incision types of procedures, which often significantly reduce the number and length of scars. This will give you the least noticeable and best hidden scars.
Belly Beauty after Baby
The abdominal muscles and skin are significantly affected by your pregnancy, being stretched out by the baby as well as by the additional weight you gain while pregnant and nursing. After delivery, and regardless of how much you diet and exercise, there may be residual changes in your tummy. You may notice excess skin or stretch marks, extra fat in the abdomen or thighs, or a loss of your shape with widening of your waistline.
There are numerous surgical options available to correct these changes. Dr. Hutchinson performs liposuction, abdominoplasty and modified or mini abdominoplasty, and will take the time to discuss which procedures are best for you. She will use the smallest incisions necessary to produce an optimal result, and will formulate an operative plan that best suits your body and your wishes.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
The eyes are often the first to betray the earliest signs of aging. Women and men may complain of a tired look, of heavy, puffy or droopy eyelids, or "bags" under the eyes. These can be corrected with eyelid surgery of the upper and lower eyelids. During this procedure, Dr. Hutchinson removes the lax skin, muscle and protruding fat of the eyelids. The result is smoother, younger looking eyes. The scars are usually imperceptible, hidden in the natural creases of the eyelids. Often the lower eyelid lift can be performed from inside the lid which leaves no visible scar whatsoever. These procedures may be combined with a brow lift or other facial rejuvenation surgery.

Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Patients are sometimes unhappy with the appearance of their nose, which may be misshapen because of normal development or as a consequence of trauma. They may wish to improve their appearance by changing the shape or size of their nose, or by making more subtle changes to specific areas of the nose such as the tip or nostrils. They may also experience difficulty breathing because of a deviated septum or other abnormality. During a rhinoplasty, Dr. Hutchinson may reshape both the bony framework and cartilage components of the nose in order to achieve the patient's desired look. This procedure may be performed concurrently with septum or sinus surgery when necessary to improve a patient's breathing.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
As the effects of sun and aging take their toll on the face, the soft tissues thin out and droop, leading to a hollowed out look, the formation of wrinkles, prominent folds along the side of the nose and chin, and jowls. Facelift techniques were developed to correct these problems, repositioning and smoothing the tissues and giving more fullness to the face. In this surgery, Dr. Hutchinson lifts the skin off the underlying muscles, tightens the deeper tissues, and restores a more youthful appearance. A "full" facelift includes rejuvenating the cheeks, face and neck, whereas a "mini", limited incision or short scar facelift will correct only the face itself. The scars are concealed in the hairline and the natural skin creases of the face.

Forehead or Brow Lift
With the effects of gravity and time, the eyebrows may droop, resulting in "hooding" of the upper eyelids and a frowning or angry look. Horizontal furrows also develop across the forehead because of normal facial movement. Surgical elevation of the brow with a forehead lift or brow lift will correct this appearance. In order to achieve this, Dr. Hutchinson will make several small incisions in the hairline and lift the soft tissues of the forehead and eyebrows. The forehead wrinkles and frown lines may also be smoothed at the same time. Sometimes the frown muscles may be accessed through the same incision used for an upper eyelid lift. The result is a refreshed, more youthful look.

Neck Lift
Occasionally, only the neck demonstrates wrinkles and loose skin, rather than the face, and so surgery is limited to smoothing out and redraping the soft tissues of the neck. Dr. Hutchinson removes the excess fat and tightens the loose skin and muscle of the neck in order to achieve a more youthful jawline and profile. The incisions are well camouflaged around and behind the ear.
Injectable fillers and Chemical peels
Dr. Hutchinson uses BOTOX® and Restylane® to enhance her surgical results, or as office procedures to correct fine or moderate wrinkles. In addition, she offers smoothing of fine wrinkles and superficial skin smoothing with the Therapon® system, both as an office and at home maintenance plan.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is performed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts, or to correct asymmetry. In this procedure, Dr. Hutchinson places the implant either below the breast or under the pectoralis major muscle to increase fullness and projection of the breast. The incisions can be placed under the arm, in the crease under the breast or around the nipple. Dr. Hutchinson advises patients on the different types of implants available, both saline and silicone filled. In some patients, the augmentation should be performed in conjunction with a breast lift (mastopexy) to tighten the skin and reposition the nipple.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
When the breasts become droopy, or if the skin has stretched out as in massive weight loss patients, breasts must be lifted back to their normal position to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result. Dr. Hutchinson reshapes the breast tissue itself, removes excess skin, and repositions the nipple in order to achieve this. Sometimes this procedure may be done with only limited incisions. If the patient so desires, breast volume may also be increased with simultaneous augmentation.

Breast Reduction
In patients with large, heavy breasts, breast reduction often alleviates patients' symptoms of back and neck pain, shoulder grooving, and poor posture. Dr. Hutchinson removes portions of breast tissue and skin, moves the nipple to its normal position, and reshapes the tissues to create smaller and more aesthetically pleasing breasts. In certain instances this procedure may be performed with a limited scar, which eliminates the sometimes problematic scar in the crease under the breast. Following a breast reduction, many patients benefit from both physical and lifestyle improvements.

Gynecomastia Correction
Men may develop enlargement of the breasts, either on one side or both sides of the chest. Dr. Hutchinson corrects this condition by a combination of procedures, including liposuction and direct surgical removal of breast tissue. In most cases, the incisions are small and well camouflaged around the nipple and on the skin of the chest.

Abdominoplasty
When the skin of the abdomen has been stretched out so much that it loses its elasticity, as in pregnancy or because of obesity, the resultant excess can only be removed by surgery. An abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" may also involve tightening the abdominal rectus muscles to achieve a better shape. In this procedure, Dr. Hutchinson removes the hanging skin and sutures the muscles in the midline to restore a svelte figure. The scar can be hidden below the bathing suit line. In certain cases, results may be improved by concomitant liposuction.

Liposuction
Liposuction is an ideal procedure to remove localized fatty deposits which do not improve with diet and exercise. In women, these areas may be around the abdomen, hips and thighs, and in men, the "love handles" at the waist line. During this surgery, Dr. Hutchinson makes several small incisions in order to insert an instrument to infuse a special solution into the fatty layers under the skin. This solution minimizes the pain of surgery as well as blood loss. The fat is then removed using long, thin cannulas. Liposuction is not a method of weight loss and Dr. Hutchinson does not perform large volume liposuction which may be fraught with higher risks and complications.

Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
As a consequence of massive weight loss or aging, the skin of the upper arms may sag and form a "batwing" type of deformity. Dr. Hutchinson can improve the appearance of the rms by removing the excess skin and creating a more pleasing shape to the arms. This may be combined with liposuction of the arms when needed.

Thigh Lift
In patients who have undergone massive weight loss, the skin of the inner thighs tends to droop and interfere with walking and fitting of clothes. When performing a thigh lift, Dr. Hutchinson removes the hanging skin and creates a smoother and more pleasing appearance to the legs. The scar necessary to achieve this result is either limited to the groin area or may extend like a seam down the inner thigh.
Total Body Lift
Often patients who have lost large amounts of weight either as a result of bariatric surgery or through diet and exercise have so much residual excess skin that a total body lift is required to improve their appearance. During this surgery, Dr. Hutchinson removes the extra tissues circumferentially, resulting in a more extensive scar that continues around the entire trunk. The effect is a combination of an abdominoplasty and lateral and posterior thigh lift. For patient safety, and because of its extensive nature, this procedure is usually not done in combination with any other surgery.
